Wedding Engagement Overview

A wedding engagement is simply the first step towards a lifetime together and it should be dealt with as much importance as any other aspect of the wedding planning process.

The first question you should ask yourself is, "What do I know about Engagement?" Then you can go ahead and get some details here about the history and traditions and a definition of engagement.

Now, "engagement" may be easily defined as "a formal agreement to get married" That is a very simple and straight forward definition!

Well let me get to some more interesting information about engagement!!

A Little History Behind Engagements

In ancient times it was very common for a girl's father to decide for her who she should date. But we have evolved over the years...

...yes, things have changed.

The only thing that remains is that the father somehow still gets involved in the process. By that I mean the groom will ask the father of the bride-to-be for her hand in marriage, :-). This was seen as a way to cement the relationship between the groom-to-be and his future father-in-law.

Let me see if I can break down the "tradition" behind the wedding engagement a bit more for you!

Since history, there was a ritual involved which includes an exchange of gifts, property, or other possessions from the groom-to-be to the bride-to-be's parents.

Doing this was seen as an important part of the marriage contract, it was not only ceremonial. It was seen as a contract because the bride's family was going to be losing her to another family forever and they needed to be compensated for that.

Talk about barter, and swopping your daughter for food and worldly possessions.

This type of exchange was known as the "betrothal".

This betrothal was brought to an end in the 18th century to a more "socially acceptable" kind of practice. Yes, I am talking about LOVE. This is where a courtship took place and now the groom would choose his bride for reasons of love, and ONLY LOVE.

Yeah, that's right, no more bartering!!

Back To The Future!!

Let us fast-forward to more modern times now.

For some couples, they plan a year-long engagement to make the necessary preparations for their wedding. This is because some of the most "popular" wedding planning specialists can be booked from anywhere between 12 and 18 months in advance. That is not as long as it sounds, trust me! If you wait too long to start your planning then you might end up in trouble with time.

Now there are different aspects of the wedding engagement process that can be looked at and I will be going through a few of them and updating as I go along.
