Give The BEST Best Man Speech Ever!

Traditionally, the best man speech, or toast, is the last speech of the evening and it is expected to be the most entertaining and humorous speech.

This speech often includes some sort of embarrassing and/or funny stories...

...but do remember that the speech also needs to be family friendly.

I say this because most best men tend to use this opportunity to share with the guests some "knocks" they would want to take at their buddy, the groom, however, if you should decide that you want to make those knocks at your buddy, ensure that you make it as subtle as possible yet still classy.

Just keep in mind that your audience will include people of all ages so you do not necessarily want to share some crazy college or other inappropriate stories.

The best man speech does not need to be all jokes though. There should be some room for kind stories that will highlight what a respectable, honorable man the groom is. It is also a suggestion that the best man be kind enough to show his gratitude and his kind thoughts towards the bride. You know, because it is mostly her day, *wink*.

That being said, let me expound on how to go about producing a great best man speech by offering you some tips.

Tips For Writing A Best Man Toast

Let me first acknowledge that being asked to make the best man speech is a great honor, but in spite of that, it is often times not willingly welcomed by most best men. This is because some of them are shy and have a fear of public speaking and there is some amount of pressure that is placed on them to get it right and make the guests interested in what is being said.

Best Man Speech

But all you need as a best man to write a great speech is just -

  • some creativity,
  • a bit of patience,
  • some amount of hard work, and
  • ingenuity.

Besides, you were thought of to perform the best man responsibilities at your friend's wedding, the least you can do in return is to have a little faith in yourself and to just make a best man speech that will wish the couple well.

Before The Process

Write down some thoughts at random about both the bride and the groom and the kind of relationship you have with them. This could include:

  • How you came to know them?

  • How did they meet and how or what did the groom tell you about her?

  • Why they chose you to be best man?

  • How would you describe each of them using the first five adjectives that come to mind?

  • What was the groom like before he met his bride, and how has he changed after knowing her? etc.

After you have your general ideas written down, you can now expound on them to create a warm, heartfelt, yet entertaining best man speech.

This is a guideline to the structure your best man speech should follow.

  • Be sure to first start off by introducing yourself. This is the best way to begin because not everyone at the wedding will know who you are. For example, you might say something like -

"Excuse me everyone, if I could have your attention for just a moment. I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words about our bride and groom, Stevan and Dionne. My name is Ricardo Henry and I am Stevan's long time buddy (or son, brother, etc.) and best man."

An introduction like this will get the guests' attention.

  • After getting their attention you could slip in a quick joke or funny wedding/marriage quote.

  • You should thank the hosts, who traditionally are the bride's parents, for hosting the wedding before you get too deep into your speech. However, if the bride and groom are the hosts, meaning they are paying for the wedding themselves, you could basically say, "We are all very delighted to be here today on this special occasion."

The Body Of The Speech

  • This is the section where the notes that you had written down before will come in handy.

  • You could share a funny story about the bride and/or groom, if you have any. Please make sure it is funny and not humiliating!. You could also share the story of how they met, or speak about how you have seen them change or grow throughout their relationship.

  • You could share your thoughts or experience (if you are married) on the whole aspect of love and marriage.

  • Important - Not because it is usually the groom you may know better you are going to focus solely on him, you should aim to make your best man speech balanced, share something about each of them.

  • Very important - Ensure that you do not make your speech too long because nobody goes to a wedding to hear anybody just rambling. Even though you want to make it as short as possible, be sure to include some interesting details, that is why you did the preparation work before the speech

  • It is a MUST that you avoid stories about ex-girlfriends and to ensure that you keep it "rated PG" for the children and grandparents in the audience!

  • Finally, it is hard to go wrong if you are speaking from the heart and with sincerity. So that is the best bit of advice. Be Sincere.

And now for the...

  • It is often recommended that your conclusion should involve a wish of some sort, blessing for the bride and groom, or a traditional toast.

  • While you are doing this you should raise your glass with a resounding "congratulations" - please do not forget to drink to your own toast!

Tips On How To Deliver Your Best Man Speech

Now, after you have compiled the notes and prepared your speech, here are some tips to keep in mind on how to deliver the best man speech:

  • First and foremost, stand up straight!. I am sure your mother thought you that. Look like you are confident in yourself and proud to be standing there to toast the couple.

  • If you have a fear of public speaking and you will be a bit nervous, just remember to speak loudly and clearly. Hopefully you will have the use of a microphone. Even though you may have a microphone, you will still need to ensure that you enunciate. Trust me, there is nothing worse than sitting and listening to five, or even ten minutes of mumbling nonsense.

  • Do not get drunk before you make your speech. This is just a no-no. You may have a drink or two that might assist you with loosening you, but any more than that will just embarrass both yourself and the bride and groom, even though you will be more humiliated and you will just look like an idiot.

  • Do not recite everything directly from the card(s). The cards are supposed to be guides to help you to paraphrase what you have written in order to make your best man speech heart-felt. Keeping eye contact with the guests while just glancing at your notes will make you look exceptionally good.

  • If for some reason you should lose your notes or even just choke while you are giving your speech, there is no harm in just saying "Congratulations" to the bride and groom.

You have come to the end of presenting your best man speech and so it is now time to relax, continue to enjoy the wedding, and support your friends.

Just Some Additional Information

You may read through the list of best man speeches and best man toasts below and highlight one or more of them that you may find appropriate to your situation.

Sample Best Man Speech #1

I'd like to propose a toast to the bride and groom. May today be the beginning of a wonderful new and long-lasting chapter in their lives, and may they always love, honor and cherish each other, just as they do today.

Sample Best Man Toast #2

There's been much clap trap about "I'm not losing a daughter but gaining a son-in-law." My sympathies to (Name), the Father of the bride, for trading his daughter for (Groom) as his son-in-law. I spent four years in college with (Groom), and I assure you, I know who's getting the better end of the trade!

Sample Best Man Toast #3

As the best man, it's my turn now to make a toast. My name is (Best Man's name), and I've known (Groom) since fourth grade. Wow. That's a long time. Back then we were more interested in transformers than girls. Then it was sports rather than girls. But, sure enough as the seasons change, there came a time when we were more interested in girls than anything else. After watching (Bride and Groom ) fall in love, I can say, now I know all those years of transformer and sports training were worthwhile - (Groom) will always have the transforming ability to say 'Yes Honey' and the Olympic endurance to say 'Yes Honey' for year, after year, after year. Here's to the Bride and Groom!

Sample Best Man Speech #4

On behalf of (Bride & Groom), I'd like to thank everyone for attending this beautiful wedding today. My name is (Best Man's name), and I am the Best Man. I have to tell you, once (Groom) met (Bride), I knew it was all over for him - he was completely smitten. He walked around in a daze with a goofy look on his face and seemed to spend a lot of time on the phone, talking in hushed tones. But seriously, I have never seen (Groom) so happy and content. I wish you both the best of luck and a life together filled with health, happiness and joy.

Congratulations, (Bride & Groom)!

Sample Best Man Toast #5

I thought I'd write the world's greatest Best Man toast. I spent hours researching on the Internet, seeking wedding poetry, vows, Tibetan wisdom journals, and even ESPN, looking for the critical insight that only a Best Man can provide. Alas, all to no avail. So all I can say is this. I cried when (Groom) told me that he was going to ask (Bride) to marry him, and the next week I cried when I heard the answer was yes. My heart bursts with joy, because (Bride and Groom) are truly made for each other.

Sample Best Man Toast #6

(Groom) and I roomed together for two years of college, and were best friends for all the years since then. Wow, what a surprise today is. The way (Groom) studied in college and never dated, I had my doubts I'd ever see this day! Let's toast the merits of (Groom) learning how to date at the tender age of 24!

(Bride), my advice is lock all the books in the basement until you've achieved your goal of three children. Oh, and take good care of (Groom)!

I hope those samples of a best man speech will assist you in producing a great speech yourself when the time is right!
