Fishtail or Mermaid Wedding Dresses

Mermaid wedding dresses are those dresses that imitates the shape of a mermaid.

They are usually very fitted at the top and then gets wider at the knees.

The Fishtail wedding dresses are similar but often have a trailing train. This type of wedding gown is recommended if you have a small bust and small waist.

They can also make the petite woman seem taller then they are by placing focus on her overall line.

This type of wedding attire is a very sexy look that highlights your curves. In order to choose this type of dress you must be confident and comfortable with your body type and your skin to pull off this dramatic, yet sexy style.

Here are a few things to take into consideration:

  • Most importantly, the mermaid cut is not for everyone.

  • This type of contoured design is best suitable to be worn by slender figures, whether short or tall.

  • Because mermaid wedding gowns were built to closely hug/caress the body and show every curve, it is recommended that full-figured brides choose them to wear.

However, if you are more on the voluptuous side and you desire to accentuate your curves, being confident and all, then this would be the perfect dress for you.

  • The most important thing to remember when you are considering to make the mermaid style wedding dress your choice of attire is whether or not you will feel comfortable wearing it throughout the entire event on your big day.

  • You may think or feel that you have a "flawless" figure that will be perfect for this type of dress, but if you do not feel confident and comfortable in it, it makes no sense you make it your final choice.

  • The mermaid dress is considered a Clingy slip dress so it often reveals embarrassing underwear lines, so be careful with that. If this should happen it will not only expose what you are wearing beneath the dress, it will also decrease the level of elegance of your overall look.

Footnote: ***It is very important to remember this when thinking about purchasing a snug-fitting or body-hugging dress because it may restrict your choice of underwear.***

Some Additional Information

The design of mermaid wedding dresses is influenced by the wide variety of skirt styles that are available. The skirt can either flare out above the knee, at the knee, or below the knee for a slightly different effect and look.

This same shape of the skirt and/or the hem can also impact how the dress flows.

For example, a round skirt would provide volume all the way around the lower part of the bride, as opposed to a trumpet flare which would create volume that flows out behind the bride.

There is also another style called a flamenco flare. This is where the lower part of the dress gathers in the front to give it a Spanish feel.

This is a very versatile style of dress because it can support almost all necklines and sleeve lengths to reveal or cover up as much skin as you would like. It is a very captivating dress by design, therefore going for a high neck and long sleeves type of look will still create that alluring look without being too sexy.

However, if you should so desire to show off your flawless skin, you may opt to choose a strapless neckline, or even a halter with a type of plunging v-neck to accentuate your seductive side.

The fabric also plays an important role. The mermaid wedding dress can either be slinky or highly constructed, because of the fabric it is made from. So if it is that you would prefer a slip style kind of dress that hugs your curves lightly, ensure that the dress is made from light-weight silks and satin.

Stiffer fabrics, however, will highlight the construction and dramatic shape of the dress.
